Composition: A Replicable Model of Cemetery Design

Respecting Tradition and Nature

The site of this cemetery design is located near the Historical center, surrounded by nature, creating a serene and contemplative space. The design takes into consideration the closeness to nature, ensuring that the cemetery blends harmoniously with its surroundings.

Andrea Bastoni's office has realized two specular three-level buildings, each with 252 cemetery plots covered by red bricks. The use of concrete for the structure and traditional materials like red bricks for the niches reflects the intention to create a contemplative space that respects the solemnity of the place.

Each level of the buildings is served by covered balconies and a staircase that not only facilitates circulation but also acts as an urban element, promoting communication and socialization. The design aims to make the cemetery easily accessible to the public, creating a space for contemplation and connection.

The challenge of this project was to create a replicable model that could be adapted anywhere, while respecting the specific Italian local identities and laws. By using traditional materials and incorporating elements of Italian architecture, such as concrete and bricks, the design successfully balances tradition, new realization, and serial production in a single composition.

This cemetery design by Andrea Bastoni has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements.
